Burlesque Dance

Burlesque Dance is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which in turn, is derived from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.

Burlesque Level 1

60mins – 8 weeks

Are you the dashing dame sitting in the front row of the burlesque review, looking up at the polished peelers and daydreaming about taking a step in their shoes? If you have all the passion but none of the stage training, this saucy workshop is a fun place to start. In this 90min session, Josephine will lead you through a short and simple choreography built around the manipulation of two classic burlesque props: satin gloves and a chapeau. With these costume elements as our starting point, we’ll explore the three basic steps that make each removal intentional, sensual, and playful. Join us for this burlesque movement class that will wet your appetite for learning the ‘art of the tease’, and leave you panting for more!

Open to all levels of experience.

Burlesque Level 2

60mins – 8 weeks
Now that you have the foundations of your burlesque, we are here to teach you the moves that will make your choreography really explosive: from bump n’ grind to pin-up perfection and back again. Each class will begin with playful warm-up exercises inspired by pin-up, ballet and cabaret movement. The remainder of the class will be spent learning a burlesque choreography. Each week’s dance will explore a different mood or style in the art of burlesque and challenge you to master this form. Students will also be asked to explore character development and energy manipulation in their choreography.

Burlesque Level 1 or prior experience required

Burlesque Level 3

60 – 8 weeks
Learn artful and innovative removals of a new iconic costume piece each week! Each of our six classes will focus on one of the following: gloves, stockings, corset, panel skirt, boa, and jacket/cape. An introductory segment will present a short fashion history of the garment, the sensual significance of the part of the body it covers, and a couple inspiring removals by today’s stars. The bulk of each class will be hands-on learning of how to manipulate each costume piece for maximum impact. All rehearsal costume pieces provided (students will be asked to bring own corsets where possible).
